ACE Weekly Update -- Jan. 13th, 2017
Welcome to 2017!!
Welcome back to our returning ACE students, and welcome to our brand new students! We're looking forward to a great new year, and it already seems to be off to a great start! This email is the ACE Weekly Update, which we send out each week to help ACE students know what's coming up and to offer tips and extra resources. Stay in the know by reading it weekly!
What's Happening Next Week: January 16th-20th
Campuses will be closed on Monday, Jan. 16th for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Adult education and college classes will resume on Tuesday, Jan. 17th.
Coaching and adult education classes began this week. Props to everyone who showed up!
Certification classes (NCCER, IC3, and ServSafe) begin on January 30th.
By now, you should have set up a weekly coaching appointment and met with your coach for the first time. If you don't yet have a coaching appointment, please email aceprogram@dcc.edu ASAP. Remember, your coach will be expecting you each week at the time you've agreed upon so that you two can continue developing your skills as a student. If you won't be able to make it at your usual time, please contact your coach in advance to reschedule. Only in an emergency should you cancel coaching on short notice.
College Student Corner:
College classes begin on January 14th, which is this Saturday. If you didn't sign up for Saturday classes, your classes will start after the MLK holiday. Not sure where to find your classrooms? Check out the campus maps in the DCC Student Handbook here.
As a college student, you have a DCC email address. If you're new to college, you might not know how to access that email account yet. See "New to college?" below. After a student's first week of college, ACE will begin using only your DCC email address, so make sure you're checking it regularly!
Did you know that you can get your college emails on your phone by downloading and setting up the free Outlook app? Try it and ask you're coaching if you need help.
New to college? Make sure to complete the following steps to be on track:
Complete the online freshman orientation here. NOTE: You do NOT need to sign up for a placement test, so please ignore that part.
Click here to learn how to log in to your DCC email and Canvas (the college's learning management system where many of your teachers will post homework, tests, and grades).
If you have any questions about setting up your email or using Canvas, please talk with your coach next week.

Coaching meetings for Spring 2017 began this week. You and your coach probably got to know each other, discussed your most burning questions about this semester, and looked over the Key Proficiencies our coaches think are most essential for college success. You probably selected a first proficiency/habit to work on and committed to some next steps you plan to take before you meet with your coach next week. Here are a few things you can expect at your coaching meeting next week:
Your coach will ask you to turn in your completed Scavenger Hunt from orientation. We will give prizes to the students who complete theirs most completely and correctly. Remember, you can find answers by consulting the DCC student handbook, the ACE Student Resource Site, or other students.
Your coach will ask you about your progress on the next steps you committed to at your first meeting. It's your coach's job to hold you accountable to the goals you set! We're excited to help you become the strongest students you can be.
Your coach will ask you what steps you plan to take this week.
***Remember, you and your coach will decide together what to discuss and work on at each meeting! We encourage you to keep a running list of questions or topics you'd like to discuss with your coach and add things throughout the week.***
ACE Student Textbook Exchange
Don't have your textbooks yet for the new semester? Want to buy or sell a textbook? We've heard from several ACE students looking to buy or sell textbooks. We'll use this section to post books that ACE students want to resell. If you want to post a book for sale, email aceprogram@dcc.edu with the book's title, author, edition, ISBN, and the class you used it for. The first book request is from Dionne Hill. She'd like to buy Biology by Raven, publisher MCG, ISBN 9781308795270. If you took Biology 141 and you'd like to sell your book, check to see if you've got this one. You can reach Dionne at dionnehill1@dcc.edu.
Remember to sign up for Delgado Alerts to receive notification of unplanned campus closures! http://www.dcc.edu/student-services/e2campus/
